Sentimental Accidents: Celebrity Snow Days →
willstegemann:
This short entry appeared on my now defunct old blog many years ago but I was reminded of it today following the passing of the Monkees Davy Jones.
When John Lennon was shot I was only six years old. I remember my mom crying, but I don’t remember being sad because I got to stay home from…
How my mom taught me to face our mortality.

A Year Of Billy Joel: Welcome To Attila →
ayearofbillyjoel:
Hello there Billy Joel fans and curious readers. I hope that you’re having as much fun reading A Year of Billy Joel as I am writing it. Over the last two months I’ve covered Billy Joel’s first four albums and I’m just about to dive into The Stranger, the album that made Billy Joel a superstar,…
Over at my increasingly obsessive A Year of Billy Joel we are beginning a...

Song: Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)
Album: Turnstiles (1976)
This post is dedicated to Brendan Haley who is a world class good guy.
From this day forward there are two types of people in this world:
1. Those who think Miami 2017 (Seen the Light Go Out on Broadway)…
This wraps up my tour of Billy Joel’s Turnstiles record. I enjoyed this more...

I never read message board comments. I don’t read reviews. I don’t Google my name. I am sure people say terrible things all the time (and nice things) but I can’t live or die by either sword. My life is so peaceful and happy ignoring all that could possibly be written. I have stopped looking at…
In my opinion there is no bigger cultural gap than the one between the class and...
3rd NY show on 5/11. Music Hall in Brooklyn.... →
Hey, people in NY go to this. I know Rob Delaney doesn’t need my help but that won’t stop me from offering it. He is top notch and I will be personally insulted if you don’t go.
Side note - 5/11 would have been my dad’s 57th birthday had he not stopped aging at 54. How did he stop getting older? He died.
If you don’t go to this show my father will haunt you.

In the dead of winter in 1999 I took a trip from Long Island to Los Angeles. The temperature was below freezing when I flew out of JFK and it was 65 degrees when I arrived in Los Angeles.
After a week in Los Angeles I went back home. Within five weeks…
Some days I just don’t really have a whole lot to say about Billy Joel...

Time to Help WFMU →
Because they are not owned by some huge Conglomco, and because they are not beholden to any taskmasters governmental or corporate, WFMU gets to do whatever the hell it wants (within FCC confines, of course). I don’t love everything I’ve ever heard on WFMU, but I do love the fact that all of it is made by real humans who love music and radio, which definitively cannot be said for everything else...

Sentimental Accidents: Headaches and Signs →
willstegemann:
In my early 20’s I begun to suffer from terribly painful headaches. Not migraines, just painful headaches. This was around 1997 a time when I taking home about $200 week and then finding a way to pay rent, keep my car insured and eat. My primary entertainment was sitting in my studio apartment…
Over at Sentimental Accidents I tell stories. Like this one about what it was...

In October of 2002, I packed up as much as I could fit in my 1997 Nissan Maxima and set out from Boston to San Diego with a little bit of savings and a whole lot of gumption. No, truthfully I didn’t really have any idea what I was getting myself into, I was more clueless than brave, but hey, I had been feeling stuck in a rut and it seemed like it would be an...
The Comedians, The Mob and the American Supperclub... →
Back in 1933, when President Roosevelt gave Americans the okay to get drunk, speakeasy proprietors scrambled to stave off irrelevance. The bootleg profits amassed during the dry years gave rise to the Mob. When the Eighteenth Amendment was repealed, the Mob was left with hundreds of useless venues furnished with every conceivable liquor serving accoutrement. They salvaged their investments by...
Gary Carter, Mets All-Time Great Catcher, Has Died... →
One of my childhood hero’s passed away today after a battle with cancer.
There was a time in my life when Gary Carter was the only man I could count on.
Rest in Peace Kid. I am glad you are no longer suffering. Thank you for all that you did for me.

One of the ways to hear so-called indie bands when I was thirteen years old was via the long-running television series Top of the Pops. That’s where Alex James wore an Oasis shirt, Manic Street Preachers made their first TV appearance as a three piece, and just about every band with a…

One Reason Why I'm Not A Cynic
Yesterday while riding the train home I was approached by a man who asked me if I could help him out. I don’t know if he was homeless but he looked to be in pretty bad shape so I gave him what I could. I usually do this, not because I’m a wonderful or special person, but just because I’m a person who believes that I have a responsibility to help those who have less than I do. Now I also happen to...

Sentimental Accidents: Bring Enough For Everyone →

Nobody told us what happened inside of the building across the street before my mother rented the house in the summer of 1983. Since we moved in over a weekend it was a few days before we found out that the small white building was an industrial bread bakery. As far as we were concerned, that…

A Year Of Billy Joel: Trying Again →

Earlier this month I let it be known that I would be happy to meet Billy Joel for lunch. This wasn’t just a whim, I had a good reason for it inviting Billy Joel to lunch, which you can read about here.
We’ll it’s been almost two weeks since I put this out there and I have heard nothing from…
THERE IS NO WAY THIS WON’T WORK.

Last Friday afternoon my wife e-mailed me to say she’d be working late. This meant I’d have time to do my favorite thing; hang out with my dog and listen to records. Since I was scheduled to run 18 miles on Saturday (I’m training for the LA…

It was hard to pick a band to begin this project with. I have a long list of potential candidates to cover, but of course, I’d need to start off with something special to convince you all to keep reading. Today’s subjects operated almost entirely within Youth Groups’ 1997-2002 window, and…

We were 13- years-old, and super excited to see the following bands: Sleeper, Kula Shaker, Terrorvision, Ocean Colour Scene and Cast. Today, as a grown man with a wife and a beard, I can look back and say that only one of those doesn’t mortify me. You’ll have to wait and see which band it is*. Not a big deal: everyone enjoys music and later moves on to something else, but that...

Why
meredithmo:
Why do people continue to make Twitter accounts for their dogs :( :( :(
Because people need to know what my dog is thinking. Like this:
*Please note that I think Meredith is the best, even though she wants to censor dogs.
