How I do this Christmas-thing.
While we don’t do presents I’ve never wanted for anything.
Why I'm Not An Athiest
Because the only thing I like less then people telling me about what they believe in is people telling me what they don’t believe in.

Me, to Will, while watching the Bears/Vikings game:
Do you think Brett Favre made some deal with the Devil that he can live as long as he wants, as long as he continues to play football?
Will: I can see that.
Me: So he wants to retire and toys with the idea, until he’s reminded that HE…

From the way back blog archive:
I tried putting a crew together but the best I could manage was the fat kid with the big birthmark on his face, the kid down the street who was not allowed to listen to rap and my little sister who was like six years old. In addition to having a wack crew I only had the vaguest idea of how to actually dance, mostly I just rolled on cardboard while music ...

Will: All of our friends seem to have great marriages.
Me: They do.
Will: You know what that means, right?
Me: No…
Will: It means that our marriage is the one that sucks!
Personal experience has taught me that when I can’t spot the failure in a crowd it’s because I’m the one failing. That said, i was only kidding when we had this discussion; of all of...
A Holiday Tale Featuring My Father and A Dentist →
So this is the second Christmas since my father passed away or, since I’m a class half full guy, the second consecutive Christmas where I don’t have to pretend to be nice to my father’s wife. Here’s one of my favorite stories about my father and me, it takes place around Christmas in I think 2002.
Nils Lofgren on Michael Vick and Sports Reporting →
From Nils Lofgren’s open letter to the sports reporting community:
I support his right to earn a living. But, while I can’t fault him for taking great advantage of the opportunities afforded him by playing in the NFL, I feel he does not deserve that lofty a place in our society and culture. However repentant he may be, he committed acts whose vileness will resonate down the years....

Celebrity Snow Days
When John Lennon was shot I was only six years old. I remember my mom crying, but I don’t remember being sad because I got to stay home from school. This started the bittersweet tradition of the “Celebrity Day Off”.
A few years later it happened again:
“Mom, John Belushi died, can we stay home from school?” - “Yes”
Then the next year:
“Mom, Marvin Gaye got shot” -“Did he die” “Yeah” - “No...

Caissie's Thing: Cat Box →
caissiesthing:
There is a cat in a box in my garage. There is something about a box that is so irresistible to a cat that no matter how cranky or aloof, at the sight of a corrugated cube, he reverts to kittenhood, crouching within, ready to playfully swipe at your ankles as you pass. Usually. The cat I’m…

The Future Has Been A Rip Off So Far
Thanks to Prince and Stanley Kubrick I spent a good chunk of the 80’s wondering about the possibilities of 1999 and 2001 only to be disappointed, just like I was when I saw the movie 2010.
My only hope for a predicted amazing future is now 2026 when, if Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is correct, we will live among sexy robots. Beyond that I’ve got nothing to hope for except for a 2069...

The Annual Telling Of The Tale
On a Christmas Day in the mid 90′s I headed to my father’s for dinner. I was not prepared for what I found when I arrived.
Nobody expected to find a little person at the house, much less a drunk one but that’s what we had that year, a boozy midget. With any business involving my father it’s best not to ask questions but I had to:
“Where did the little guy come from?” -“I won him” “Playing...
I'll Try It, But I Won't Like It
A few months ago I got a routine check up and discovered that I’ve got abnormally high triglycerides, which puts me at risk for heart disease. I‘m only 36 years old so there’s no reason to panic but given my family history of heart disease I immediately made some changes to my diet and began exercising 3-4 days per week. So far things are going well: I’ve lost weight, gotten into running and am...
